Kate Hudson’s Honest Statement About Her Stepfather Kurt Russell Is Raising Eyebrows

Kate Hudson’s Honest Statement About Her Stepfather Kurt Russell Is Raising Eyebrows

Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell’s romance may look perfect, but appearances can always be deceiving. Lucky for us, then, that Kate Hudson, Goldie’s daughter, has come forward with the unfiltered truth about her family. When she was just a girl, the household was rocked by a major crisis — one that brought Kurt into the picture. And while the events that unfolded were concealed from the public for years, Kate felt the need to set the world straight.

A Broken Family

It’s important to remember that Kate and Kurt were once strangers. Actor and musician Bill Hudson started out as the man of the house, but that family fell apart. Kate has described her relationship with her dad as “darkly comedic,” while Bill admitted, “It makes me feel horrible.” And in one interview, he seemingly dared her to change her last name. But is Kurt to blame for the distance between them?

Their First Meeting

In another world, Kurt could have been Kate’s biological father. You see, Goldie and Kurt actually met on the set of the ’60s Disney film The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band. But while the two had a major crush on each other, there was a problematic age gap. “I was 21, and he was 16. I thought he was adorable, but he was much too young,” Goldie later said. Fate would eventually conspire to bring them together, though…

Another Run-in

Yep, Kurt and Goldie joined forces yet again for the drama Swing Shift. Now, it was the ’80s, and the five years that separated the pair weren’t an issue. There was another problem, though. “We both said we would never go out with another actor,” Goldie explained.

Breaking Rules

Those reservations didn’t last, because Goldie could tell Kurt was a good person. “He was so good-looking, but he had no pretense about him,” she said. “I could tell right away he wasn’t a womanizer.” And so the couple went on their first date — never anticipating the painful troubles one man would soon cause them.

Creating Their Family

Both Goldie and Kurt were bringing children into their new relationship. Kurt had a son, Boston Russell, and Goldie was a mom to Kate and her brother, Oliver. But blending families can be a complicated process. And things only got more complicated with an absent parental figure. Enter Bill.

Father Figure

A couple of years earlier, Goldie’s ex-husband had estranged himself from his former wife and children. And Bill had something to say about that. He claimed that Goldie was “willfully alienating” him from the family. Back then, Kate and Oliver were too young to understand what was happening. But Kurt decided to do something about it.

Such A Natural

“What really got me was when I watched my kids when they’d come to the set and how he was with them,” Goldie said of Kurt. “He was amazing with them. He was such a natural.” This kind of dedication once again showed that Kurt was in it for the long haul. But life wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows after this. Far from it.

Abandoned By A Parent

Kate and Oliver have both explained how difficult it was to deal with Bill. It was hard to know that their biological father didn’t care enough about them to raise them. “I think we both probably suffered differently and very similarly to anybody who feels abandoned by a parent,” Kate said.

Dedicated Parent

But Kurt dedicated his time to raising Kate and Oliver alongside Boston. And on the surface, it looked as though Kate loved spending her childhood with Kurt. She’s since spoken out about him, too. When Kurt celebrated his 70th birthday, Kate was just as full of praise for him as her mom was.

The Post

“Happy birthday, baby! What a wild ride. No, we never got married, but one thing that continues to grow is our love. You’re a wild one — brilliant, lovable, childlike, perfectly maddening, a father supreme, and deeply funny!” Goldie wrote on Instagram. “I can’t imagine my life without you at any age, Kurt Russell. You’re the catch. And you’re all mine.” Aww!

Kate’s Opinions

Goldie wasn’t the only one of Kurt’s relatives to post about him on the ’gram. Like her mother, Kate had plenty of wonderful things to share about her pa. “I’m gonna gush cause I don’t often about this man, but I figure since today he turns 70 I’m gonna let it out. Plus he’ll never see this,” Kate wrote. She also included a rather frightening thought.

One of a Kind

“I often wonder how different our life would have been if he never entered the picture. How different I would be,” Kate wrote of Kurt. “Let me fill you in. His laugh will echo through generations as powerful as his concocted stories of grandeur that may or may not be true (may we never know). He’s an original. One of a kind.” Sounds nice, but was that all she had to say about him?

An Immense Love

Nope! “[He’s] a powerful, intelligent, talented, loyal family man. He has taught me that we can all exist with immense love through our differences,” Kate went on. “And his dedication to my mother and their fight for love forever is as admirable as it gets. I love this man so much!” But there was one thing Kurt did that really stood out. According to Kate, anyway…

Living Courageously

“A note for all dads of girls. He gave me the gift of confidence instilling a knowingness in me that I deserved everything I worked for, and I knew that he’d always have my back in whatever challenges may lay ahead,” Kate wrote of her stepfather. “When you have a dad who gives you permission to be confident, you live courageously.” But the heartfelt actress wasn’t done yet.

Insta Love Letter

After penning a near-essay on why she loves Kurt, Kate had to remember why she started writing in the first place, “And that’s my Insta love letter to my dad who has lived 70 years today. Happy birthday, Pa. How bout we give some big Hip Hip Hoorays to this wild man!” And Kurt’s good influence only became clearer as Kate went through some life-altering changes.

You see, Kate is now a parent of three to sons Ryder and Bingham and daughter Rani Rose. And she and Danny Fujikawa — Kate’s fiancé and Rani’s biological dad — have been coordinating parental duties. In a way, they’re just like Goldie and Kurt. “I’ve got multiple dads, I’ve got kids all over the place!” Kate said.

Family Time

“The only expectations I have that are really high in my life is with my kids and with family stuff,” Kate said. And during the pandemic, Kate’s been spending plenty of time with her family. “I never thought in a million years that I’d spend a year in one place,” she said.

The Reality of Parenting

“When you have so many kids, sometimes you have those moments where you’re hiding in your bathroom going, ‘Please, please, get me out of here!’” Kate added. And, apparently, her three children can work as a trio to annoy/entertain their mom. Plenty of parents will know that feeling!

A Full Home

As for Kate’s relationship with Kurt? Well, it still looks good. Until the world opens again, Kate’s family have apparently been staying with Goldie and her partner. Oliver and his three children are there, too.

Her Parenting Style

But Kate is also concerned with her children understanding their privilege. “I’m actually quite lenient as long as they’re doing their part,” she said. “As far as I’m concerned, there’s what you’re entitled to, and then there’s your privileges.”

Moral Compass

“The only things you’re entitled to are a roof over your head, food, and my love. Everything else is a privilege,” Kate said. “And I’ll take it away in a heartbeat if you’re not respecting our home’s moral compass.” You have to keep that compass aligned, and Kurt’s not the only one who’s helped. Goldie’s career choices have also greatly influenced her daughter.

Early Inspirations

Of course, Goldie’s acting talent would eventually make her a household name. But her first passion in life was something entirely different: dancing. Inspired by her own mother — herself a dance teacher — Goldie owes a lot to the craft.

Dance Like Nobody’s Watching

“I consider myself more a dancer than anything else,” Goldie has admitted, emphasizing that, “If you can express yourself without being afraid of looking silly…I think that is a beautiful thing.” And without the art form, she wouldn’t be where she is today.

Precocious Beginnings

While she engaged in ballet as well as go-go dancing, the young starlet was actually discovered in a can-can line in Los Angeles. Immediately afterwards, she was shuttled off to Hollywood to get her start in television comedy.

Road To Success

The charming actress skyrocketed to success quickly, appearing regularly on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In and even winning an Oscar at 24 for her role in iconic rom-com Cactus Flower. However, the fast fame would soon take a serious toll on Goldie…

‘A Very Strange Ride’

She remembers going to a psychiatrist at as young as 21, trying to sort through the mental issues she was experiencing. “It was a very strange ride, a quick rise to stardom. I was unsettled. I didn’t know where I was going,” she confessed.

A Helpful Revelation

Then, when she was 26 years old and still dealing with the grave impact celebrity can bring, Goldie found solace in an unusual source: meditation. “My experience was visceral, it was amazing… I can’t explain the joy that was brought back to me,” she reflected wistfully.

Staying Strong

And so, with this newly cultivated emotional tool at the ready, Goldie bravely marched forward, continuing to live her life in the public eye. By the ’80s, she had expanded her career to new heights she didn’t previously believe were possible.

A Unique Vision

She began producing her own movies, exerting a new level of control that she hadn’t had when she was merely acting. However, Goldie didn’t pick just any film; she had a special vision that some in society would struggle to understand.

Breaking Boundaries

Goldie’s films focused on women in roles that were highly subversive at the time. She played a soldier in 1980s Private Benjamin and a football coach in the 1986 film Wildcats. While she made bold moves, the celeb quietly suffered from harmful prejudice.

‘A Cultural Problem’

“It is not always easy having power and being female,” she’s lamented, continuing, “that’s the way it was. It wasn’t that all men were terrible or that the situation was unbearable. It was a cultural problem.” Despite adversity, she soldiered on.

The Calm Before The Storm

By the ’90s, Goldie was a mother of three and had settled into life with Kurt Russell. She was still riding the wave of fame at the time, too, starring in The First Wives Club. But soon that perfect facade would experience a major rupture.

Getting Older

Once she hit her fifties, Goldie stopped getting incessant calls to appear in movies and shows. Recognizing this trend as a reflection of Hollywood’s bias against middle-aged women, the star pulled one dramatic move.

Time To Move On

Goldie took things into her own hands, remarking that she “wasn’t going to wait for a phone to ring. And I certainly wasn’t going to continue to produce… I’d done it, I did it, it was done. It’s time to move on.” Strangely enough, Goldie’s next pursuit would be inspired by a national tragedy.

Tragedy Strikes

In 2001 when 9/11 rocked the nation to its core, Goldie had been compiling research for a documentary about happiness. After the infamous terrorist attack devastated New York City, she decided to switch gears a bit.

Mind Up

This is when she launched into what would become one of her most compelling accomplishments yet: a curriculum for children aged thirteen and under that focused on the importance of mental health and mindfulness. She named it Mind Up and got straight to work.

Advocating For Wellness

Her efforts would prove incredibly successful. After only four months of participating in the program, which involved daily “brain breaks” and gratitude journals, Goldie reported that the children had experienced positive changes in their emotional health. She has one childhood activity to thank for her effectiveness.

Coming Full Circle

It all goes back to dancing. This is the hobby that she says gave her “an aspect of mindfulness that I didn’t even realize that I was getting…[dancing] is like a meditation unto itself.” And while some would be put out by unfair Hollywood standards, Goldie focuses on the positive.

Difficult Reflections

She is a staunch supporter of the #MeToo movement and stated that society has made great headway in recent decades. However, she still reflects sadly on her own experiences, remarking that “back then we had to make our way around the patriarchal society… a lot of it could be sleazy.”

Recent Pursuits

Since her decades-long retreat from Hollywood, Goldie appeared in some more hit movies, such as Snatched in 2017. Even so, her true passion is focusing on the wellness of the world, a topic that’s especially urgent these days…

Special Advice

Goldie shared some special advice for kids struggling to get through quarantine times: “before you go to bed, think of three things that went well today. I don’t care if it’s a little crazy thing – it doesn’t matter.” Also, she added, dancing is always a great option.
