Severe weather has left tens of thousands without power in several states overnight, as a more massive severe weather outbreak will extend over the Ohio Valley, south, and southeast today; plus more of today’s weather news and forecast.
A cold front which has already dropped temperatures by some 20-30 degrees in the northern US will make its way into the Ohio Valley and the south today, where the clash of cool and warm air fronts will make the perfect recipe for severe weather.
As nearly half the nation will experience thunderstorms today, a massive area of severe weather will encompass at least 15 states and potentially more. The threats include heavy rain, damaging winds, large-scale and isolated tornadoes.
Severe weather will break out on two fronts: The largest is over the Ohio Valley, south, and southeast. A secondary severe weather front will occur over south-central and southeast texas.
The states under severe weather watches and warnings as issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) include: Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas.
Severe weather overnight, which included tornadoes as confirmed by the National Weather Service (NWS), has left tens of thousands without power in several states amid widespread damage.
At least 61,000 people in western Pennsylvania were without power. Over 80,000 people were without power in Ohio.
A large area of mixed precipitation will span across the northern tier of the country from Minnesota to Maine on Thursday, resulting in particularly heavy snowfall for northern New Hampshire and the entire state of Maine, which could see a range between 2-16 inches.
Bangor is anticipating 8-12 inches, and in some areas, north of between 10-16 inches.
