Saturday and Sunday saw at least 17 tornadoes across seven states, with more severe weather forecast over the next two days as snow continues in parts of the west and east; plus, more of today’s weather news and forecast.
Over the weekend, seven states saw at least 17 tornadoes that touched down ranging in strength from EF-1 to EF-3 with winds of up to 140 miles per hour.
An EF-3 tornado tore through Jonesboro, Arkansas, completely destroying at least 55 homes and the Mall at Turtle Creek. Arkansas’s governor has declared a state disaster.
Iowa saw the most tornadoes with 8, Illinois had 4, a trio of tornadoes touched down in Arkansas, 2 in Indiana, and one each in Missouri, Wisconsin, and Kentucky.
The National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting heavy rain and thunderstorms extending across the central US spanning from the Dakotas southward into Texas and eastward to the Carolinas.
The NWS forecast predicts thunderstorms for portions of southwestern Kansas and into western Oklahoma, as well as southeast Texas between Dallas and Houston, the northern half of Louisiana, and west-central Mississippi.
The NWS issued a warning of the potential for flash flooding and heavy for portions of eastern Texas, and southeastern Oklahoma.
In addition, central and southern Arkansas, the northern half Louisiana, and over west-central and north-central areas of Mississippi are all at risk.
Portions of the west will continue to see snowfall throughout portions of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico.
In the Northeast, mostly a wintry mix but some areas could see some light snowfall.
